"I was born in Bradford on the 26th September 1950. From a very early age I was interested in Art and was encouraged very much by my mother. In 1969 I started a Foundation Course at Bradford College of Art under the formidable personality of 'Roddy' Carmichael. A Scottish Dynamo of a man, a stickler for old school drawing skills and lateral thinking.
Having gone into Art School with a vague idea of going into Graphics or Advertising I was directed by Roddy to apply to Exeter College of Fine Art. 1970 saw me moving to Exeter to start studying for my Diploma (DipAD).
In 1973 I returned to Bradford. My artistic influences were wide, ranging from Bosch/Bruegel to Ensor, Hopper to Warhol and Pop Art. My first exhibition was at Bradford Central Library Gallery which contributed to me winning the Trident Television Fine Art Award.
A period of Wet Street paintings arose and created a buzz within the galleries of Yorkshire and neighbouring counties. Meanwhile my figure paintings morphed into the Street Life paintings sometime in the mid 1990's. I suppose they're nostalgic glimpses of a half imaginary, half real period of earlier happiness and simplicity (1950's/60's). I think that is why they strike a chord with people".
